Data in ClimateImpactsOnline Sahel Region

This portal illustrates the possible impacts of climate change on the Sahel Region for the sector climate and first parameters for the sectors health and agriculture. Climate parameters include temperature and precipitation derived quantities such as the number of days above 30°C. Observational data is available for the period 1981-2014 and simulation results for the past and future. The latter is derived from the CMIP6 simulation collaboration. Three integrated zoom steps lead you to more detailed presentations of the regions or districts.
Visualized for the Sahel are now three different Shared Socio-economic pathways (SSPs) of Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Underlying to each of the SSPs are different assumptions on the future development of economy and climate protection efforts. We would like to refer to here for further information on the different pathways. The visualized maps of different variables display the median over all years in the time span (10-yearly, 30-yearly) and over different General Circulation Models (GCM) that participated to CMIP6. In the diagram view, 10- and 90-percentiles calculated on the same data is shown. We make use of the observational data set W5E5 for the years 1981-2014. This means that for the decade 2011-2020, only 4 years are present and likewise the difference maps is only relative to the years 1991-2014. We will continuously update and communicate further data of W5E5 in this decade. Agricultural data contains areas, productivities and yields for different crops cultivated in the Sahel from 1961 to 2019. For the entire region, data has been mainly allocated from FAOSTAT (UN). National data sources vary depending on the country.
